The 2003 IUCN Red List of Endangered Species distinguishes four subspecies:
-The western lowland gorilla occurs in West Africa (Gorilla gorilla gorilla),
-the Cross River gorilla (Gorilla gorilladiehli) at the Nigerian/Cameroonian border;
-the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei)lives on the Virunga Volcanoes
-and the eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri) in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in the Bwindi Forest.
